Ivory House, St Katharine Docks
Morpheus London has recently completed the interior design of a three bedroom penthouse apartment in Ivory House, St Katharine Docks.
The location itself is prime Central London and yet the docks are unexpectedly peaceful given their setting, complete with views over the picturesque marina, home to over 200 yachts, as well as Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.
The docks were designed by Sir Robert Telford in the 1820s, quickly gaining a global reputation as a hub for trade goods coming into London from Africa, the West Indies and the Far East. Ivory House was built in 1852, completing the building works of the dock.
Originally used as a warehouse for luxury goods including ivory, silk and feathers, it was transformed into much-coveted residential apartments in the mid-twentieth-century.
The property was sympathetically structurally re-designed internally to maximise the space, while continuing to honour the heritage of the building.
The highly architectural apartment contains two en-suite guest bedrooms, a master suite with dressing room and semi-open plan bathroom, a study, and finally a double-height open plan kitchen and reception area spread over 2,235 square foot.
The impressive reception room features a contemporary staircase with glass balustrade, leading to a mezzanine level opening onto two terraces; one featuring a hot tub and the other an outdoor seating area.
The staircase was designed to appear light and unobtrusive in the space, with ‘floating’ treads and carefully designed strip-lighting for a stunning effect in the evenings.
Morpheus’ brief was to create a modern, welcoming and luxurious pied-a-terre for the client.
The furnishings are fresh and contemporary, cutting clean silhouettes against authentic architectural features such as original flagstone flooring, intricate metal ceiling trusses and the trademark arched windows.
Finishes are to the highest standard including sumptuous polished plaster walls and Namibia white marble, with an overall palette which is warm and neutral for a perfectly tailored and calm feel.
